When WordPress 'updates' using the browser admin tools, it will, for a few seconds only, on a good host put the site in maintenance mode....this is so no scripts are run during the update...so...the update failed and the site is still in maintenance mode - review these topics on the codex and contact your host.
That said, I encourage those who can to use FTP to upload site updates and always to backup first.
